Our family recycled our favorite vacation during spring break this year. In fact, if you want a blow by blow account of the trip we took last time to Baja, Mexico, see the following blog posts:
When we went last time, the entire trip was new to us. Our goal was to get to warm water that wouldn’t break the bank with our seven kids. I couldn’t find tons of information on how we’d make the trip with our needs (cheap, quick, lotsa people to find places to sleep and store gear), so I figured I’d share with the world some tips and tricks that we discovered along the way, which is why I made all those blog posts.
This time around, we felt pretty comfortable setting off on this family adventure and the post will be less words and more pictures!
It’s no small feat to drive from Oregon to mid-Baja. Drive time is a serious consideration! With that said, Heidi, the fifth grader, maintains the drive time was her favorite part of the whole trip.
There’s plenty of time to watch life happen as we zip by on the road.
We went to most of the places we visited last time around. First major destination: to see the grey whales! We camped near the local salt flat, which is a pretty cool sight to see.
Adventure does not come without periods of waiting.
This trip the dolphins came to visit us first.
CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS?!?
We found a super comfortable, relaxing RV camp spot on the way down this time. We were allowed unlimited orange/grapefruit/lemon picking and juicing!
Our next camp spot is one of our favorite. First things first: pump up the paddleboards and get out on the water!
The dolphin chasers are WAAAAAYYYYY out there. Heidi went out to give them moral support on the long paddle back.
The rest of us waited.
Yep, they’re still out there. The color of the sky and water was just like this photo. Amazing!
We didn’t spend all our time on the water.
Rare photo of Craig and I. It’s hard to pry the camera out of my hands.
Take note of the promontory in the distance on this photo. It’s the one that is pretty steep, dropping off right into the water.
We paddled out to the promontory in this below photo. The paddleboards and kids are right next to the cliff, since it drops off and the fish were easy to see from there. I’m looking back towards our camp spot, beyond this cliff.
Woohoo! This guy is happy to be alive! I had my little 35 mm camera with me, not able to zoom up close to any of these high flyers. So I was twisting around trying to catch them as they jumped. If anyone is joyful to be alive, it’s these rays!
Onto our next camp spot.
The wind, at times, could be tiring, which made these palapas so nice to have as a retreat.
Our final destination was a place we had never been before. It turned out to be one of the most beautiful!
It makes me happy that I’m not the only one in the family who is a pansy about heights. This is actually a pretty decent drop off.
Though it was beautiful here, the water was really cold.
Even so, they went in for a second time.
Success!
Whoa! These dolphins were so big!
One of our main staples were quesadillas.
This was a new adventure for us. We went clamming.
