It’s been a few weeks since I’ve posted a Friday Favorites. I’ve been taking photos throughout the whole time, but have been so busy with work and fun, that I haven’t had time to post any. This particular set shows a little of what it was like for one of those weeks. The kids, plus a couple extra and I went backpacking into the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness. A friend, Doyle, provided his horses for him and Craig to ride while packing in food and some gear for us while up there. This photo is before we started.
Once up there, the kids helped care for the horses, feeding and watering them in the morning and evening.
We had oatmeal for every breakfast. Lacey was sure she didn’t like it. She lasted without breakfasts until the last two days and discovered she actually like the stuff.
Our days followed the same pattern. Two rides were led each day, with Craig leading one of the them and Doyle leading the other. Each kid would get one ride per day. I would opt to take a day hike every morning and managed to find someone to come with me each day. This picture below shows the lake we were camped out down below. Kena and I bushwhacked straight up the hill to get a view from the PCT. Unfortunately, the fires made it really hazy.
Later that afternoon Doyle took a group out and did the same trip up to the PCT and then went south for a ways before heading back towards another trail that led back to the lake. I was amazed the horses made that walk. I felt like I was walking up stairs when on that last meadow up to the trail. The awesome detail in that whole trip is that Lacey held on behind Jo the entire time!
The next day I enticed K to come with me and we were rewarded by views of Mt. Jefferson.
Mid week Doyle told the kids to clean up the horses a bit. The shot on the right cracks me up because I’m pretty sure that horse likes baths about as much as any fifth grade boy!
The kids spotted a log raft on the other side of the lake. They wanted it on our side.
