This is a “get to know Marci” blog post, letting you know a little about myself through a quick adventure with my youngest daughter. Through this short period of time that I was taking photos of Lacey, I realized that I am not a helicopter-mom, but quite the opposite. Maybe I was on our first child. Now that there are so many of them, it’s a pretty natural thing to be less hands on. The evening I took these photos of Lacey I found her in a little tree, begging for some help to get down. She was sure that she was stuck up there forever, without help. It took, maybe all of five minutes, for her to figure out how to get down, and I was so pleased to be able to tell the simple story with just a few photos. At the end, it felt so good to see her conquer the tree, learning through her failures and successes.
If I were to talk about my process of taking photos, I’d say I’m not a helicopter-photographer (if there were such a term!) either. I like to give some initial direction, but then feed off the clients personalities and interactions, which gives me the photos I like: real and relational pictures of who the people are. Being a children’s photographer, it’s so important to be fluid and run with the flow. I’m definitely not knocking those who are specific and detail oriented. My husband is one of those photographers, and that’s a gift too, paying attention to the small stuff to make the photo sing. I’m just happy that there are many ways to make good photos!
